SUPERVISORS AGREE TO EXTEND $0 DEAL! TAXPAYERS ON THE HOOK FOR... NOTHING?

One has to wonder what dazzling administrative services are being rendered for free. Perhaps CalMHSA is operating on a principle of enlightened self-interest, or maybe they just really, really like filling out forms for the sheer bureaucratic joy of it. This isn't just about the money, or lack thereof; it’s about the endless paper-shuffling and meeting-scheduling that goes into rubber-stamping something that costs precisely zero dollars. The time spent debating this fiscal non-event at the Board of Supervisors meeting could surely have been better used discussing, say, real issues, like finding a parking spot downtown.

And lest we forget the crucial CEQA determination: this non-existent financial transaction is, miraculously, not a 'project' subject to environmental review. Because naturally, approving a $0 contract could, in some Kafkaesque bureaucratic reality, cause irreparable harm to the monarch butterfly habitat or, heaven forbid, shift a sand dune.
