The Whipping Post Take on UCSB Daily Nexus
STUDENT GOV’S LATEST ‘LEADER’ DELIVERS SUMMER FLUFF, SURVEY SAYS NOBODY CARES
UCSB’s student politburo offers a thrilling update on a summer spent achieving exactly nothing, proving once again that college bureaucracy is a self-licking ice cream cone of performative activism.

Campus BeatWhile the rest of us were toiling away, fueling the economy that these future ‘leaders’ will someday inherit and then inevitably tank, the UCSB Daily Nexus breathlessly reported on the summer activities of A.S. EVPLA Noah Luken. Apparently, the highlight of Mr. Luken’s break wasn't, say, building something useful or contributing to the free market, but rather being ‘appointed’ to a board and, wait for it, developing a survey. One can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from Isla Vista residents, who surely couldn't wait for a student government functionary to quantify their living conditions, as if their rent statements weren't already doing a perfectly good job of that.
This is classic left-leaning academic hubris: instead of identifying real problems and proposing actionable solutions rooted in fiscal responsibility and individual liberty, they commission a ‘survey.’ Because what Isla Vista really needs isn't affordable housing built by actual developers, or reduced regulations to encourage entrepreneurship, but more data points for a PowerPoint presentation that will gather dust in some administrative office. One imagines the survey questions were riveting, likely probing the deep philosophical quandaries of 'Do you prefer kombucha or oat milk with your avocado toast?'
The real story the Nexus missed, or perhaps deliberately ignored, is the sheer cost-benefit analysis of such an endeavor. How many student fees were siphoned off to fund this monumental 'survey'? How many hours were spent in committee meetings discussing the font choice for the questionnaire? While the Trump administration is busy restoring America's economic might and securing our borders, these campus mini-bureaucrats are busy perfecting the art of performative governance, ensuring their résumés are padded with phrases like 'stakeholder engagement' and 'qualitative data analysis.' It’s almost endearing, in a 'bless their hearts' kind of way.
One can only hope that Mr. Luken’s ‘appointment’ to the IVCSD Board brings with it a newfound appreciation for the crushing weight of public sector bloat and the endless cycle of committees that achieve little beyond perpetuating their own existence. But given the source and the subject, we won’t be holding our breath. Next, perhaps, they'll commission a study on whether students prefer grades over participation trophies. The suspense is unbearable.
