The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
STATE STREET: 'OPEN' FOR BUSINESS... (ONLY IF 'BUSINESS' MEANS 'HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT'!)
The Independent finally notices what conservatives have screamed for years: locking down State Street was a brilliant move for… tumbleweeds and Tent City expansion.

Well, bless their hearts! The Santa Barbara Independent, not one to rush into a conclusion faster than a turtle trying to outrun a snail, has finally stumbled upon the profound realization that perhaps, just perhaps, keeping State Street hermetically sealed off from vehicular traffic might be, you know, bad for business. Only took them a few years, countless shuttered shops, and the transformation of our once-vibrant downtown into a picturesque backdrop for urban blight to connect those dots. We here at The Whipping Post have observed this grand progressive experiment with morbid fascination, noting how quickly the 'pedestrian paradise' devolved into a perfect storm of bicycle chaos and 'al fresco' panhandling.
Their breathless discovery that 'local businesses depend on visibility, convenience, and customer traffic' is a groundbreaking revelation worthy of a Nobel Prize in Economics, right up there with 'water is wet.' Who knew that denying motorists easy access, parking, and the ability to, say, actually *carry* purchased goods to their cars, would deter shoppers? Clearly, not the city council members who, in their infinite wisdom, decided that transforming a main artery into a glorified bike path and an open-air living room for the unhoused was the path to economic revitalization. One has to wonder if their next big 'scoop' will be that sunshine is good for solar panels.
But let’s not be too harsh. It takes a certain kind of intellectual fortitude to ignore the obvious for so long, only to breathlessly announce it as fresh insight. The real story here, of course, isn't that State Street is struggling (a fact anyone with eyes could see), but that the very same progressive policies and 'visionary' urban planning celebrated by the very outlets now wringing their hands are directly responsible. It's almost as if the 'experts' who championed this debacle might have ulterior motives, perhaps aiming to depress property values for future 'equitable' redevelopment, or simply proving how truly out-of-touch they are with the realities of Main Street commerce. Meanwhile, our small businesses continue to pay the price for their ideological fantasies. Welcome to the party, Independent. The 'open' sign has been flipped to 'closed' for far too long.
