Their latest plea for 'flexibility' on State Street sounds suspiciously like 'please let us pretend our progressive pedestrian paradise isn't slowly strangling downtown businesses while we figure out a new way to fund our pet projects.'

For years, the self-appointed urban planners in this town have treated State Street like a giant, experimental canvas for their utopian visions. First, it was the 'promenade,' then the 'parklet playground,' all while the actual merchants struggled to get deliveries, customers found parking a nightmare, and the county's coffers felt the squeeze of dwindling sales tax. Now, with the stench of fiscal reality wafting in, suddenly 'flexibility' is the buzzword, meaning they need more time to concoct a new scheme to avoid admitting that cars, and the shoppers they bring, are a vital part of a functioning downtown.
