STATE STREET: INDEPENDENT SHOCKER! BUSINESSES DON'T WANT CARS, JUST GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS!The Dispatch
Santa Barbara Independent · The Whipping Post · NO.660 · PANEL 6/6 · SB-603

Well, bless our pointed little hearts at The Santa Barbara Independent for finally stumbling upon a 'truth' that’s about as shocking as finding sand on the beach: local businesses like money! And if that money comes from endless government-funded 'revitalization' projects and keeping cars off the street – meaning less parking enforcement, fewer delivery headaches, and a captive audience of confused tourists – then by all means, let's ban combustion engines from State Street forever.

According to the Independent, a whopping 23 out of 26 business owners who bothered to chime in on the State Street debate prefer the pedestrian promenade. Imagine that! When you’ve been weaned on COVID-era grants, city-sponsored street fairs, and an administration that thinks 'economic development' means more consultants and less parking, why would you want the gritty reality of actual traffic and competitive commerce? It’s far easier to sell artisanal kale smoothies to foot traffic lured by the promise of public art and a tax-funded, car-free utopia.

What’s *really* being said here is that downtown has become an open-air mall managed by the city, where profitability is secondary to 'vibrancy metrics' and Instagrammable moments. The old adage was 'the customer is always right.' Now, in Santa Barbara, it's 'the public comment is always right, especially if it leads to more public funding.' And while our betters at the Independent scratch their heads wondering if this means the ‘public has already weighed in,’ we at The Whipping Post can already tell you the next big headline: 'City Council Approves $10 Million Study on Optimal Shade Tree Species for State Street Pedestrian Promenade to Maximize Bohemian Vibe.' Taxpayers, rejoice!
