STATE STREET: A $100M BOONDOGGLE TO NOWHERE, WITH EXTRA PAVERS!
After six years of navel-gazing, Santa Barbara’s City Council finally greenlights a 'Master Plan' for State Street that guarantees more traffic jams, fewer businesses, and the sweet scent of tax dolla

The DispatchSanta Barbara’s City Council, bless their little hearts, has officially approved a $100 million 'Master Plan' for State Street. Six years in the making, this magnum opus of municipal malarkey promises to transform our historic thoroughfare into... well, something vaguely resembling a slightly more expensive version of what we already tried. Noozhawk, in its usual understated fashion, pointed out that this plan is a 'road to the past,' which is generous considering most roads to the past at least had clear lanes for emergency vehicles.
For nearly a decade, local businesses have been fleeing faster than a city council member from a tough question, property values have cratered, and emergency services are playing Frogger just to get down the street. Meanwhile, our civic leaders have been locked in a trance, debating the optimal shade of artisanal street paver while actual commerce withered. Now, with a cool $100 million of taxpayer cash earmarked for what effectively amounts to a permanent street fair, we can all rest assured that Santa Barbara’s reputation as a city that actively discourages economic activity is safe.
The real genius of this plan, which is still awaiting actual engineering (because why plan ahead?), is its uncanny ability to solve problems that don't exist while ignoring the ones that do. We predict a new wave of 'pop-up' businesses: 'Pop-Up Empty Storefronts' and 'Pop-Up Parking Ticket Dispensers.' But hey, at least we’ll have more expensive benches for the homeless to sleep on, which certainly isn't a problem the city has been wrestling with.
And who benefits from this colossal expenditure? Certainly not the struggling small business owners or beleaguered taxpayers. But somewhere, a well-connected 'urban planning consultant' and a 'paver-tile magnate' are popping champagne corks, dreaming of all the 'community engagement workshops' and 'design charrettes' this boondoggle will fund. Expect the usual suspects to ride this gravy train straight to the bank, while the rest of us get to enjoy slower ambulance response times and an even more vibrant 'for lease' sign landscape. Bravo, Santa Barbara!
