Santa Barbara’s official paper of record, The Independent, recently graced its readers with a scorching hot take on the mayoral election, declaring the city in an “identity crisis.” One might wonder if the real crisis is their editorial board's ability to discern actual news from glorified campaign pamphlets. Endorsing Sneddon, they imply she’s the sole beacon of hope, neglecting the fact that true leadership doesn't require a daily affirmation from the local fishwrap.

Indeed, if Santa Barbara is having an identity crisis, it’s because it can’t decide if it’s a globalist playground for the elite or a place where average taxpayers might still afford a breath of fresh air. The Independent’s glowing endorsement of another establishment fixture signals that, once again, we’re expected to clap along as the city continues its downward spiral into progressive-mandated absurdity and tax-payer funded boondoggles. One might almost suspect a few too many latte-fueled brainstorming sessions are to blame, or perhaps a deep-seated fear of anything resembling common sense.

What The Independent conveniently omits, amidst its hand-wringing about “identity,” is the identity of the donors and developers who stand to gain the most from continued progressive leadership. While they cheerlead for more of the same, ordinary Santa Barbarans are still waiting for a mayor who prioritizes public safety, actual infrastructure, and perhaps, just perhaps, a budget that isn’t bleeding red ink faster than a toddler at a juice box convention. But hey, at least we'll always have those incredibly insightful endorsements to guide us, right?

It’s time to ask whether The Independent is reporting on our city, or actively trying to shape it into something unrecognizable, all while patting themselves on the back. Perhaps Santa Barbara's true identity crisis is figuring out how to survive another four years of this kind of 'leadership' and 'journalism.'
