The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
SHORT-TERM RENTALS: WHEN PROFITS TRUMP PROGRESSIVE PIETY!
Local homeowners dare to dream of economic liberty, much to the chagrin of the Independent and its perpetually pearl-clutching readership.

Well, bless their little, ever-so-progressive hearts. The Santa Barbara Independent recently saw fit to publish a letter from a local homeowner brazen enough to suggest they might — gasp! — want to rent out their own property on a short-term basis. One can practically hear the collective shudder from the granola-munching, virtue-signaling set across town. Imagine the audacity: a private citizen actually wanting to utilize their assets to make an honest buck, rather than sitting idly by while the County Supervisors scheme up new ways to regulate every last breath out of them.
The letter, which courageously defended the radical concept of private property rights and economic self-determination, must have sent shockwaves through the Independent's echo chamber. For too long, the local establishment has treated every Airbnb host like a villain, despite the fact that these 'undesirable' short-term rentals are often the only way some families can afford to stay in this increasingly unaffordable paradise. Apparently, the idea of a homeowner having agency over their own investment is more terrifying than an unfunded pension liability.
What the Independent, in its usual detached-from-reality fashion, consistently misses is the sheer chutzpah of the regulatory state attempting to dictate how people use their own homes. While they fret over the 'character' of neighborhoods, they ignore the character-building opportunity of financial independence. It's almost as if they believe property ownership comes with an immediate expiration date on common sense and personal freedom. Meanwhile, the actual housing crisis—driven by endless red tape and anti-development zealotry—continues to spiral, while they busy themselves penalizing those trying to navigate the mess.
It’s a classic move from the local left: if a policy benefits individual enterprise and puts a few extra crumbs in the pockets of actual people instead of bureaucratic coffers, it must be bad. Trump's America is about putting power back with the people, not perpetually expanding the powers of local busybodies who think they know how to run your life better than you do. Perhaps if the Independent ever ventured outside of its ivory tower, it might notice that some folks actually enjoy the freedom to earn a living.
