We're told they're 'honoring the work' and 'empowering the future' — which, in SBCAN-speak, means honoring the sacred cow of bureaucratic inertia and empowering more regulatory quicksand for anyone foolish enough to try and innovate here.

The fete reportedly involved the obligatory 'changing of the guard,' though one suspects the guard changed from one eco-crusader to another with the same finely tuned ability to locate the nearest permitting bottleneck. But here’s the angle the Independent didn’t print: follow the money. How many of these 'action network' stalwarts also sit on boards of various 'environmental' groups benefiting from grant money or taxpayer-funded studies? And how much of that celebratory champagne was paid for by the very foundations that profit from maintaining the status quo, effectively blocking any development that might compete with their existing wealthy donors' property values? SBCAN isn't about 'community action'; it's about protecting the gilded cage that is Santa Barbara, one 'environmental impact report' at a time.
