SBCAG'S 60-YEAR MILESTONE: SIX DECADES OF 'REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP' (AND YOUR TAX DOLLARS!)

It’s 2026, and while President Trump is busy restoring American greatness, our local Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has found a critical item for their agenda: patting themselves on the back for sixty years of the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG). Sixty years! One can almost hear the triumphant trumpets, perhaps playing a dirge for all the taxpayer dollars that have flowed into this venerable 'regional partnership' over the decades. What exactly does SBCAG do, you ask? Well, it 'coordinates.' It 'plans.' It 'discusses.' Often, it 'studies.' And then, presumably, it holds another meeting to discuss the studies.

Like many such regional bodies, SBCAG operates in that ethereal space where decisions are made, but accountability often gets lost in the shuffle of 'inter-jurisdictional cooperation.' We’re sure those sixty years have been absolutely jam-packed with productivity, resulting in, well, exactly what? More traffic? More housing mandates dreamed up in Sacramento and rubber-stamped locally? Less local control, perhaps? The Board will undoubtedly laud its 'visionary leadership,' but any actual tangible benefits for the average taxpaying citizen remain as elusive as common sense in a county planning meeting.

The real story here isn't the six decades of 'partnership' – which often translates to 'committees deciding how to spend money on consultants' – but the astonishing ability of government agencies to not only survive but thrive for generations, regardless of actual output. While you’re stuck in traffic, wondering why your gas taxes keep going up, remember that a group of officials is busy high-fiving over sixty years of what they call 'progress.' The agenda item from the Board of Supervisors is less about celebrating an achievement and more about acknowledging the continued existence of an entity that manages to consume resources without demonstrably improving the lives of those it ostensibly serves. Perhaps instead of resolutions, we could get some results. Or at least a clear accounting of how those 'regional planning' budgets translate into real-world improvements for Santa Barbara County residents, rather than just more bureaucratic bloat.
