SB UNIFIED SUMMER MEALS: BECAUSE 'LEARNING LOSS' IS JUST FOR TAXPAYERS!

Your kids might not learn anything all year, but rest assured, our ever-expanding school bureaucracy will still make sure they're fed on your dime, all summer long.

Edhat, bless their hearts, just told us the Santa Barbara Unified School District is generously offering 'free' meals all summer. 'Free,' of course, meaning 'paid for by the increasingly beleaguered taxpayer who dared to earn a living in California.' It seems the district believes that while academic rigor can take a vacation, the gravy train of government-subsidized sustenance never stops. One must wonder if this perpetual feeding program is truly about 'child nutrition' or just another ingenious way to keep the district's bloated administrative machine humming through the slow season, justifying jobs that seemingly exist to hand out lukewarm hotdogs.

Apparently, even when the classrooms are gathering dust and actual education is on hiatus, the good folks at SB Unified simply can't bear to let go of their captive audience. What a novel concept: public schools providing services that extend far beyond, you know, _school_. Perhaps they'll start offering free summer haircuts next, or maybe even car washes for parents. The possibilities for mission creep are endless when you're spending other people's money. It's a miracle they haven't yet declared themselves the primary caregiver for all children from birth to matriculation, effectively completing the government takeover of parenting.

And let's not forget the environmental impact. Think of the carbon footprint of all those extra food deliveries, the plastic cutlery, the discarded milk cartons – all in the name of ensuring little Timmy and Susie get their daily dose of government-approved calories. One might almost suspect this isn't about feeding the genuinely needy, but about maintaining a sprawling, unblinking bureaucratic eye on every aspect of a child's life, from their report card to their lunchbox. True conservatives know that responsibility starts at home, not with an all-encompassing, year-round government meal plan.

Meanwhile, while the district focuses on becoming a full-service summer caterer, the public is left to ponder if perhaps, just perhaps, some of those funds could be redirected to, say, improving actual academic outcomes. But that would require actually expecting results from the system, and where's the fun in that when there are uneaten tater tots to distribute? It's a classic case of the district prioritizing its continued expansion over its core mission, all while the local press nods approvingly.
