SB SCHOOL DISTRICT BUILDS GHETTO FOR TEACHERS, CALLS IT 'AFFORDABLE HOUSING'

Noozhawk breathlessly reports that the Santa Barbara Unified School District has finally broken ground on its much-touted 'employee housing project.' Apparently, after years of paying teachers so little they couldn't afford a ditch to sleep in, the brilliant minds at the district have found a solution: cram them into subsidized housing units on public land. It's not a pay raise, mind you, just a new form of indentured servitude with better plumbing.

This grand plan promises to keep our dedicated educators 'local,' which is code for 'trapped in a housing market they can only navigate if we build them glorified dorms.' While the district pats itself on the back for 'innovation,' one has to wonder: if teachers were paid actual market wages, wouldn't they be free to choose their own homes, perhaps even ones with, gasp, more than one bedroom and a postage-stamp-sized yard?

But why address the root cause of the problem – runaway spending, bloated administrative salaries, and a bizarre aversion to fiscal common sense – when you can just build more 'affordable' boxes? This isn't helping teachers; it's centralizing a workforce and creating a captive audience under the watchful eye of the district. It also conveniently skirts the actual cost of living in Santa Barbara, which continues to skyrocket thanks to endless regulations and a 'build nothing' mentality from local progressive planners.

The real story Noozhawk missed, of course, is the subtle shift toward a district-as-landlord model. Who benefits when the school district becomes a major property owner, beyond the grandstanding bureaucrats? It's a socialist's dream: collective living provided by the benevolent state… er, school district. Just another step toward making sure our public employees are just that – public property, housed and managed for 'efficiency.'

So, while the district celebrates groundbreaking, taxpayers should probably be looking for the groundbreaking expense report. We're sure the construction costs will be as 'affordable' and fiscally responsible as everything else overseen by Santa Barbara's benevolent bureaucratic overlords. And what could possibly go wrong with a district becoming a landlord and property manager, right? We're sure there will be no mission creep whatsoever.
