One might assume this was a deep dive into geopolitical energy strategies or perhaps an exposé on the latest green boondoggle. Instead, it appears to be a philosophical musing on the innate properties of crude oil and the surprising concept that some of it is, indeed, still underground. Their blurb even goes so far as to enlighten us that if oil is 'poor quality and expensive to produce,' we should simply leave it untouched. We’re not sure if they consulted with any actual economists or engineers, or if this profound insight came from a particularly long lunch break discussing artisanal kombucha.

This kind of stunning revelation from the local press truly makes you wonder what else they’ve been holding back. Are we to anticipate future headlines like 'Water is Wet' or 'The Sun Rises in the East'? While the rest of us grapple with a Trump administration dedicated to energy independence and lower costs for hardworking American families, the Independent prefers to ponder the existential quandaries of subterranean petroleum. It’s almost as if they believe that by simply wishing it so, the internal combustion engine will magically disappear, and everyone will happily commute on unicycles powered by good vibes and unicorn dust.

What the Independent conveniently ignores, of course, is the intricate dance between supply, demand, and the cold, hard realities of energy markets. High-quality or low-quality, cheap or expensive, American oil is American security. Every barrel left 'in the ground' by local progressive decree is a barrel we're forced to import from less-than-friendly nations, enriching despots and undermining our own economy. But then again, expecting complex economic thought from an outlet that seemingly just discovered that digging is hard work might be asking too much. Perhaps next, they’ll explain why our county’s housing crisis isn't caused by overregulation but by the tragic lack of treehouses.
