SB INDY ASKS THE HARD-HITTING QUESTIONS: WHY IS JAIL… A JAIL?The Dispatch
Santa Barbara Independent · The Whipping Post · NO.784 · PANEL 4/6 · SB-2A1

The Santa Barbara Independent, ever vigilant in its quest to redefine reality, has stumbled upon a perplexing quandary: Why does our local jail still look, well, like a jail? Apparently, with all the progressive 'diversion, treatment, and court practices' (read: letting folks off easy) designed to empty the cells, one might expect the structure itself to spontaneously transform into a yoga retreat or perhaps a vegan co-op. The implication, of course, is that jails are an outdated concept, much like personal accountability or a balanced budget.

Our earnest colleagues at the Independent seem genuinely baffled by the County's refusal to convert the penal facility into, say, a community garden for ‘justice-involved’ individuals. They've discovered, to their apparent horror, that despite fervent efforts to ensure fewer people actually face consequences for their actions, the building stubbornly retains its original purpose. It’s almost as if the purpose of a jail is to house people who break the law, regardless of how many virtue-signaling programs are concocted to avoid that outcome.

Perhaps the truly 'unseen' angle here is the utter lack of foresight from our local progressive leadership. They've prioritized feel-good diversion programs over, you know, actually having a functional place to put violent offenders when diversion inevitably fails. While the Independent gazes wistfully at a future where jails are obsolete, taxpayers are still footing the bill for a justice system that increasingly struggles to do its primary job: protect the public. But don’t worry, they’re probably busy brainstorming how to make the cells gender-neutral and serve oat milk lattes.
