SB COUNCIL'S RENT 'STABILIZATION' SCHEME: MORE 'STABLE' THAN THEIR BRAIN CELLS?

The progressive brain trust over at Santa Barbara City Council has outdone itself, gleefully slapping residents with what they charmingly call 'rent stabilization.' For those of us who graduated economics kindergarten, that's just a fancy, politically palatable term for plain old rent control – a policy that historically generates about as much housing as a group of toddlers managing a construction site. While Noozhawk’s Peter Rupert gently pointed out their dots were unconnected, we’re here to suggest they might have forgotten what dots even are.

This grand plan caps rent hikes at 60% of the CPI or a generous 3%, whichever is lower. Which, in a booming economy under President Trump, means a guaranteed loss for property owners and a swift exodus of quality housing from the market. Clearly, the Council's vision extends only as far as the next virtue-signaling press release, utterly blind to the predictable fallout of less investment, reduced maintenance, and a city looking more like a progressive dystopia than a desirable place to live. It’s almost as if they want to drive property owners out to pasture, leaving the city ripe for some grand, centrally planned housing scheme that will surely be a beacon of efficiency and affordability.

But let's be honest, this isn't about affordability for the masses; it's about control. It’s the usual leftist playbook: demonize property owners, ignore market realities, and then wonder why the very problem you claimed to solve just got exponentially worse. The real angle here, the one the other papers won't touch, is how quickly 'rent stabilization' morphs into a municipal power grab, paving the way for more layers of bureaucracy, more 'experts' on the public payroll, and fewer actual housing units. Perhaps these council members should try stabilizing their own spending habits before dictating how private citizens manage their property.
