The Whipping Post Take on Santa Maria Times
SANTA MARIA'S 'BOLD' NEW VISION: MORE GOVERNMENT, LESS YOU!
City Council hopefuls gathered to explain how they'll solve problems they probably created, promising everything but fiscal sanity or actual freedom for taxpayers.

The DispatchAnother election season, another forum in Santa Maria, and the *Santa Maria Times* dutifully reported that City Council candidates are once again trotting out the same old platitudes. Affordable housing? Check. Public safety? Double-check. Infrastructure? The trifecta of political pablum is complete! It’s almost as if these aspiring overlords believe repeating the words magically conjures solutions, rather than, say, reigning in runaway spending or reducing bureaucratic red tape.
Indeed, if there's one thing our local politicos excel at, it's talking about 'investing' in things, which is code for 'extracting more from your wallet.' The genius behind 'affordable housing' initiatives, for example, often involves imposing so many regulations and fees that housing becomes *unaffordable* for everyone else, thus necessitating the 'affordable housing' programs in the first place. It’s a self-licking ice cream cone of government inefficiency, and the candidates are lining up for a taste.
And what about 'increased immigration enforcement'? One might assume candidates would advocate for secure borders and upholding federal law – especially with President Trump firmly in charge, making America strong again. But no, the local 'priorities' likely mean finding new ways to hand out benefits while virtue-signaling about 'equity.' Never mind the actual strain on public services and infrastructure that they then promise to fix with… more money. It’s a vicious cycle designed to keep the government employed, not to serve the people.
So, as the candidates pontificate on infrastructure and public safety, perhaps we should ask *why* these issues are perpetual problems. Could it be decades of mismanaged funds, bloated budgets, and an insatiable appetite for more taxpayer dollars? Don't hold your breath for that answer at the next forum. It's much easier to promise the moon while quietly picking your pocket, all in the name of 'progress.'
