Evidently, the solemn duties of attending meetings and approving every single land-use variance for favored developers just isn't compensated enough in this high-cost-of-living area. One can only imagine the immense strain of deciding which new apartment complex will further burden our already-strained infrastructure, or how best to spend federal grants on initiatives that make perfect sense to consultants, but not a single resident. Clearly, these are burdens that demand a higher wage, far above what mere taxpayers like you and I earn.

While two councilmembers, bless their hearts, dared to vote against the pay raise, the majority clearly understood that public service is, first and foremost, about serving oneself. It's almost as if some people run for office less for civic duty and more for the prestige, the power, and, naturally, the fatter paycheck. Don't worry, they'll surely justify it with some mumbo-jumbo about attracting 'top talent' – because nothing says 'top talent' like someone whose primary skill is voting to increase their own salary. Meanwhile, the actual top talent, the people running the businesses that generate the taxes, continue to scratch their heads, wondering why they didn't get into politics.
