SANTA BARBARA HAS TWO CLASSES: NIMBY HYPOCRITES AND THE WORKING SUCKERS
Leave it to local scribes to discover class division while ignoring the mountain of City Hall red tape that created it.

The DispatchA columnist over at Noozhawk had a sudden flash of sociological revelation this week, announcing Santa Barbara is neatly divided between those trapped in a brutal housing crunch and the lucky few sipping biodynamic pinot while watching their Zillow estimates pop. It is a cute little binary, perfectly tailored for the brand of bespoke navel-gazing our local intelligentsia mistakes for deep thought. But like every progressive sermon delivered along the American Riviera, it conveniently edits out the architects of this gilded cage: the very regulators, zoning tyrants, and coastal planners who spent four decades making sure nobody under the age of fifty could afford so much as a broom closet.
Let us talk about the two actual kinds of people in this town. On one side, you have the limousine liberals who plant yard signs declaring love and inclusion on their manicured lawns, only to swarm the next Historic Landmarks Commission hearing to scream that a modest duplex will cast a shadow on their heirloom tomato patch. On the other side are the working families, cops, and young professionals who get taxed into oblivion to fund a County bureaucracy that treats pouring a concrete foundation like an environmental catastrophe. For years, the local progressive machine has waged total war on free enterprise and private development, wrapping every shovel in seven layers of CEQA appeals, bureaucratic delay, and mandatory Spanish tile aesthetic extortion.
Meanwhile, the county supervisors and city council elites continue to collect campaign checks from entrenched donor trusts while feigning shock that teachers and nurses have to commute from two counties away. It is the ultimate progressive shell game: strangle private supply until property values hit the stratosphere, preserve the private sanctuary of the ruling class, and then run on 'solving' the very crisis you spent thirty years engineering. Santa Barbara didn't run out of dirt. It ran out of common sense, choked to death by an unchecked administrative state that will study affordability into the ground before it ever lets an honest builder break ground.
