A proposed Assembly bill might have made California the nation's most secretive state, proving once again our 'representatives' love transparency — as long as it isn't theirs.

Noozhawk dutifully reprinted the news of Assemblymember Blanca Pacheco's recent legislative genius: a bill that, if passed, would have made accessing public records pricier and, therefore, practically impossible for many. One might assume Sacramento's finest are simply trying to save taxpayers money on paper clips, but the suspicious timing—right after a slew of embarrassing revelations about government waste—suggests a different agenda.

Indeed, nothing says 'public service' quite like raising the barrier to entry for the public to scrutinize public servants. This could have easily transformed California into a bureaucratic black hole, where 'open government' is just another buzzword for the annual budget surplus that never quite materializes for the little guy. It certainly makes you wonder what skeletons they're so keen on keeping locked away in the statehouse closet.

Of course, the Left coast's political machine loves to preach about 'equity' and 'access' until it's their own expense accounts and backroom deals being poked at. Rest assured, if this bill were about protecting, say, a union's negotiation strategy or a massive, over-budget 'green energy' project, it would have sailed through without a peep. But shining a light on the actual mechanisms of government? That's apparently too much 'democracy' for our progressive overlords.

This is just another stark reminder of how far Sacramento will go to shield itself from accountability. While they push for more 'oversight' of private citizens and businesses, the government itself prefers to operate in the shadows, presumably because the glare of public scrutiny makes their carefully crafted narratives about 'progress' look like what they are: expensive follies. It’s a good thing this particular absurdity (for now) hit the political recycling bin, but mark our words, they’ll be back with a new way to keep you in the dark. After all, a state that proudly leads in taxes and regulations must also lead in opacity. It's only logical.
