The Santa Barbara Independent, bless their cotton socks, recently pondered the weighty question of whether e-bikes are, in fact, bicycles. Apparently, in the People's Republic of California, this requires an entire Senate Bill – SB 1167 – to determine if a two-wheeler with a motor is a bicycle or, gasp, something else entirely. One might think our esteemed legislators have nothing better to do than dissect the existential crisis of an e-bike, especially when actual cars are regularly performing demolition derbies through local businesses. But why focus on the mundane task of keeping drivers from turning Main Street into a NASCAR track when you can regulate the wattage of Aunt Mildred's Sunday cruiser?

This is Sacramento's M.O.: invent a problem, pass a law, declare victory, and then wonder why nothing actually improved. While they’re busy measuring motor output and debating the very nature of pedals, the real issue of reckless driving and crumbling infrastructure gets another pass. Perhaps if the state spent less time micro-managing personal transportation choices and more time on, say, fixing roads or, dare we suggest, prosecuting actual crimes, our storefronts might remain intact and our streets a bit safer. But no, let's blame the e-bike.

The brilliant angle everyone else missed? This isn't about e-bikes; it's about control. It’s another small, incremental step by the Sacramento blob to define, categorize, and ultimately tax every aspect of Californian life. Today it's a bike's motor; tomorrow it will be the speed at which you walk your dog. It's never about public safety; it's always about expanding the bureaucratic footprint and ensuring everyone bows to the wisdom of their progressive overlords. Meanwhile, the actual dangers persist, untouched by the infinite wisdom of SB 1167, proving once again that the only thing California's government regulates efficiently is common sense, right out of the building.
