Or, as folks who pay for things call it, rent control. Apparently, when you can't build enough housing thanks to layers of red tape and 'environmental' nitpicking, the next logical step is to punish the people who actually own rental properties. It’s a classic progressive playbook: create a problem, then propose a 'solution' that makes it worse, all while patting yourselves on the back for 'protecting tenants.' Protecting them right out of available housing, presumably.

Santamaria's vision, as regurgitated by the Independent, paints a picture of tenants saved from the boogeyman of market rates. What it conveniently ignores is the cold, hard reality that rent control doesn't create more housing; it discourages new development and maintenance. Why invest in a property when politicians dictate your returns? This isn't protecting tenants; it's driving away landlords, reducing the housing supply, and ultimately making the problem of affordability even more intractable. But hey, it sounds good in a campaign brochure, and that's what truly matters to the current crop of council members.

The real angle the Independent missed, as usual, is the insidious link between these 'tenant protection' efforts and campaign finance. Whose pockets are getting lined by the activist groups pushing these policies? And which developers, often those with deep ties to city hall, magically get their projects fast-tracked while mom-and-pop landlords are choked by new regulations? Follow the money, and you'll find that 'stabilization' often means solidifying political power and rewarding favored entities, not actually helping ordinary folks find an affordable place to live.

What we’re seeing here is a tired act: the Santa Barbara City Council, ever eager to assert control over private enterprise, is yet again choosing grandstanding over genuine economic solutions. While they prattle on about 'fairness,' the only thing being stabilized is the city's reputation for being a great place to avoid if you’re looking to invest or provide much-needed housing. But rest assured, our local paper will continue to give them a platform to explain their latest bureaucratic brainchild, completely unburdened by journalistic skepticism.
