RENT CONTROL: ANOTHER LEFTIST 'SOLUTION' GUARANTEED TO SOLVE NOTHING!Housing Desk
Santa Barbara Independent · The Whipping Post · NO.992 · PANEL 4/6 · SB-6Q7

Santa Barbara's 'Independent' (bless their hearts) is wringing its hands over the proposed Rent Stabilization Ordinance, complete with a mandatory 'Rental Registry.' They're suddenly worried this leftist brainchild might actually 'trigger the very displacement it seeks to prevent.' You don't say! It's almost as if every city that's ever tried rent control has seen it backfire spectacularly, but why let inconvenient facts get in the way of a good progressive fantasy?

This isn't an 'SB Issue' as the navel-gazers claim; it's a 'Democrats-Ignore-Supply-and-Demand' issue. The left's playbook is always the same: create a problem with over-regulation, then invent a new, even more disastrous regulation to 'fix' it. Instead of encouraging development and property rights, our local overlords prefer to demonize property owners and micromanage every facet of the housing market until there's nothing left but abandoned buildings and black-market rentals.

The real angle the 'Independent' tiptoes around is how this registry paves the way for a whole new level of municipal busybodying, and provides job security for a fresh crop of bureaucrats. Every 'registry' is just another data-gathering apparatus for the state, and every 'stabilization' is a step closer to telling property owners what they can and can't do with their own assets. Perhaps if the ideologues running this town spent less time crafting punitive ordinances and more time incentivizing actual housing construction, we wouldn't be having this tired debate. But then, they wouldn't get to feel morally superior, would they?
