Your elected Board of Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom and guided by the ever-so-transparent Community Corrections Partnership (CCP), recently convened to rubber-stamp the Fiscal Year 2026-2028 Public Safety Realignment Plan. Clocking in at an estimated 45 minutes, this wasn't exactly a robust debate, but rather a swift passage of what amounts to a blank check for more of the same.

Evidently, the County Executive Officer's 'policy' recommendation was followed to the letter, ensuring that the critical public discourse was kept to a minimum. The highlight reel included the mesmerizing act of receiving a presentation (truly groundbreaking stuff) and, crucially, accepting a plan developed by the same individuals who will likely benefit from its implementation. Who needs outside scrutiny when you have an inside track?

But the true legislative acrobatics came with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exemptions. Our Supervisors, with a straight face no less, declared that pouring millions into 'public safety' initiatives, which inevitably involve more government programs, more personnel, and more interventions, somehow doesn't constitute a 'Project' with any environmental impact. Apparently, the environmental impact of increased bureaucracy, soft-on-crime policies, and the resulting societal decay are not measurable by CEQA standards. It's a 'common sense exception,' they tell us, because surely, more taxpayer-funded endeavors can't possibly affect the environment; only, you know, actual development does.

Translated from bureaucrat-speak, this means the Board will continue to fund programs that treat symptoms rather than causes, all while patting themselves on the back for 'community-focused' solutions. The untold story here, conveniently glossed over by the SB County Board of Supervisors, is the ever-growing budget for programs that consistently fail to deliver a substantive reduction in crime, while skirting any real accountability. It's a classic case of pouring good money after bad, wrapped in a bow of regulatory evasion.
