PROGRESSIVES PROVE THEY'VE NEVER READ THE CONSTITUTION, OR A LEDGER

Santa Barbara’s latest rent control folly proves once again that leftists believe 'property rights' are just something rich people made up to avoid sharing their Peloton subscriptions.

Noozhawk · The Whipping Post · NO.873 · PANEL 5/6 · SB-6J2

Santa Barbara's perpetually befuddled progressive establishment has once again reminded us why they're so good at generating virtue signals and so terrible at managing a thriving city. This week, we saw Noozhawk's mailbag alight with the predictable wails of property owners — because, apparently, expecting a fair return on your investment is now considered a radical right-wing conspiracy. The city council, bless their economically illiterate hearts, just passed another 'rent stabilization' ordinance, proving they've never met a private sector they couldn't strangle with red tape.

It’s always the same tired song: a developer has the audacity to build something, creating jobs and housing, and then the 'public good' brigade swoops in to 'stabilize' — which is progressive-speak for 'confiscate.' They yammer on about 'affordable housing' while simultaneously making it impossible for anyone to actually *build* affordable housing. The cost of complying with Santa Barbara’s Byzantine regulations, fees, and, now, rent caps, means only the most desperate or well-subsidized projects even see the light of day.

What these self-appointed saviors of the working class consistently miss, or willfully ignore, is that you can’t squeeze blood from a turnip, nor can you expect people to invest millions in a property only for the city to dictate their profit margins. This isn't 'eminent domain,' folks, it's just plain eminent stupidity. The real story here isn't tenant protections; it's the continuing destruction of property value and the chilling effect on future investment, all for the sake of a few feel-good headlines that do absolutely nothing to solve the actual housing crisis these same politicians created. Keep it up, Santa Barbara, and soon we'll all be 'stabilized' into the Stone Age.
