The Whipping Post Take on Lompoc Record
PRIME-TIME CHARITY: BEZOS AND LT. DAN BUY WHAT COUNTY HALL WON'T
While County Hall blows millions on climate task forces and consultant study groups, our brave firefighters must pass the hat for basic gear.

Power & PoliticsLeave it to the credulous scribes at the Lompoc Record to swallow a press release whole and call it good journalism. The outlet dutifully cheered this week as the Santa Barbara County Fire Department secured a nearly $50,000 grant from Amazon and the Gary Sinise Foundation to purchase a state-of-the-art emergency drone. While any upgrade for our frontline heroes is cause for celebration, nobody in the local press corps seemed inclined to ask the embarrassing question: why does a county sitting on a record multi-billion-dollar budget need Hollywood royalty and an online superstore to buy essential equipment for its first responders?
Our brave firefighters routinely put everything on the line to defend rugged foothills and coastal neighborhoods from devastating wildfires. They deserve the absolute best tools technology can offer, without having to wait for Lieutenant Dan to run a bake sale. Yet year after year, County Hall treats core public safety like a Kickstarter campaign while treating boutique progressive pet projects like an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Follow the paper trail across the downtown administration building and the math gets infuriating in a hurry. The Board of Supervisors never hesitates to rubber-stamp millions for equity audits, environmental consultant retreats, endless green-energy red tape, and fleets of subsidized electric staff cars that never leave the parking garage. When an activist group wants a six-figure study on the emotional well-being of coastal scrub jays, the check is cut before lunch. But when the men and women who actually run toward the flames need an airborne thermal camera to map a brush fire before it jumps a ridgeline, the county shrugs and waits for corporate philanthropy to step in.
God bless Gary Sinise and Amazon for stepping into the breach to support Santa Barbara County's finest. But taxpayers ought to take a hard look at their property tax bills and ask why local government spending has become so utterly inverted. If County Hall spent half as much money protecting actual communities as it spends subsidizing progressive bureaucratic bloat, our first responders wouldn't have to rely on Amazon Prime to do their jobs.
