PASEO NUEVO 'REDEVELOPMENT': COUNCIL CHEERS HOUSING CRUSH!

Your friends at KEYT NewsChannel 3-12, in their relentless pursuit of truth, recently informed us that the Paseo Nuevo 'redevelopment' got the big green light from the Santa Barbara City Council. Green, of course, being the preferred color of both money and progressive virtue signaling. The council, after presumably high-fiving each other over their visionary prowess, authorized the city administrator and attorney to move forward with escrow. Because nothing says 'revitalization' like turning perfectly good commercial space into – surprise! – more rental housing.

Now, common sense might suggest that a city wrestling with a retail apocalypse and a growing homeless population could find more innovative uses for massive, empty department stores than converting them into even more luxury apartments. But then again, common sense isn't exactly council policy these days. The Whipping Post predicts this move will do precisely nothing to alleviate the actual housing crunch for working families, instead simply adding more units for the perpetually expanding class of tech bros and trust-funders who can afford Santa Barbara's sky-high rents. It's the same old tune: 'affordable housing' for everyone, as long as 'everyone' has six figures to drop on rent alone.

What KEYT didn't quite spell out is the sheer lack of imagination on display. This isn't 'redevelopment'; it's 'repacking.' Instead of innovative solutions that might actually boost local commerce or attract new businesses, the council opts for the easiest, most self-congratulatory path: more housing mandates, fewer genuine retail options. One can only imagine the sheer delight on developers' faces as they watch the council rubber-stamp yet another project guaranteed to pad their bottom lines, all while the city pretends it's solving a problem it largely created. Expect property values to... well, they'll just keep doing what they do, as the remaining retail suffers and the city's unique charm slowly becomes just another generic, overdeveloped coastal town.
