The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
NO PAROLE? WHAT ABOUT THEIR 'LIVED EXPERIENCE'?
Santa Barbara's justice system locks up two alleged gang members, completely ignoring their unique journey and the urgent need for a restorative talking circle.

Well, folks, the Santa Barbara Independent just broke the earth-shattering news that two individuals, identified as 'gang members' by the Man, have been sentenced to life without parole. Apparently, our local justice system, ever so keen on upholding archaic norms, has decided that accountability is more important than understanding the complex socio-economic tapestry that surely led these poor souls astray. Where was the panel discussion? The community dialogue? Most importantly, where was the equity consultant to guide us through this difficult conversation?
One has to wonder if District Attorney John T. Savrnoch, a man clearly obsessed with things like 'evidence' and 'laws,' even considered their 'lived experience.' Did anyone offer them a freshly brewed artisanal latte and a safe space to process their feelings before dropping the hammer? We suspect not. It’s almost as if the system prioritizes public safety over embracing progressive theories of justice. Such a provincial outlook for our otherwise enlightened county.
And let's not forget the victims, who, while regrettable, clearly hadn't considered how their untimely demise might impact the personal growth journey of these two men. In a perfect world, these gentlemen would be out on a supervised nature walk, journaling about their feelings and developing coping mechanisms, not languishing behind bars. It's a sad day when personal responsibility trumps the opportunity for collective introspection and a really good, long hug.
Surely, there were other options. Perhaps a strongly worded letter of disappointment from the city council? Or a mandatory online course in conflict resolution? But no, our esteemed legal system, in its infinite wisdom, goes straight for the 'life without parole' option. Unimaginative, uninspired, and frankly, a bit rude.
Perhaps next time, the Independent could delve deeper into the systemic failures that truly underpin these incidents, rather than merely reporting on the predictable outcomes of a punitive system. After all, isn't it more important to discuss the *roots* of crime, somewhere between a lecture on gentrification and an organic farm-to-table lunch?
