Follow the MoneyCalifornia’s esteemed Governor Gavin Newsom, who apparently still runs the state when he’s not auditioning for MSNBC, has signed into law an extension of the farmer-to-food bank tax credit. The Santa Barbara Independent, naturally, covered this monumental act of fiscal generosity, because nothing screams ‘good governance’ like a Democrat extending a tax break to ensure the optics of feeding the poor while simultaneously expanding the bureaucracy that creates the need for food banks in the first place.
Indeed, our benevolent state government, which has perfected the art of creating problems and then offering expensive, convoluted solutions, is now patting itself on the back for incentivizing farmers to donate produce. One might wonder, however, if our agricultural giants, burdened by California's oppressive regulations and skyrocketing costs, might prefer a general tax cut or, dare we say, *less* government interference so they could, you know, afford to farm and perhaps *sell* their goods at prices ordinary citizens can afford, thus lessening the need for a 'food bank' altogether.
But that would be too simple, wouldn't it? Instead, we get a carefully crafted, decade-long tax credit designed not just to help the hungry, but to ensure that everyone feels warm and fuzzy about Sacramento’s benevolent hand, while masking the real issues driving food insecurity: a government that taxes, regulates, and spends its way into making everything more expensive. It’s a classic move: create a problem, then be lauded as a hero for offering a complex, politically expedient 'solution' to it.
