The Whipping Post Take on Noozhawk
NEWSOM’S BUDGET BRAWL: TAXPAYERS THE ONLY LOSERS (AGAIN!)
California's perpetually confused Governor, Gavin Newsom, is locked in another budget battle with his own party, proving that even a single-party state can't agree on how to spend other people's money

Noozhawk, ever the diligent republisher of deep thoughts from the Sacramento swamp, recently enlightened us with Dan Walters' take on the Golden State's latest fiscal follies. It seems Governor Newsom, bless his heart, is once again playing king-of-the-hill with legislators over California's budget. Shockingly, even with a supermajority of his own progressive ilk, consensus remains as elusive as a balanced budget in this state. It's almost as if the only thing they can agree on is spending more of your hard-earned dollars, just not *how* to divvy up the spoils.
Walters' piece, for all its nuanced prose, simply highlights what every tax-paying Californian already knows: Sacramento is a perpetual wrestling match where the only true winners are the special interest groups and the only consistent loser is the taxpayer. The Governor proposes, the Legislature disposes, and somewhere in between, billions evaporate into the ether of pet projects, dubious social programs, and ever-expanding bureaucracy. Imagine if they applied this much vigorous debate to, say, reforming CEQA or reducing the state's crushing regulatory burden instead of squabbling over who gets to sprinkle more progressive fairy dust on the balance sheet.
The real story Noozhawk missed, of course, is the sheer audacity of this repetitive charade. Every year, it’s the same song and dance: “unexpected” revenue shortfalls (how can they be unexpected when the state's policies are deliberately hostile to business?), followed by a dramatic display of political brinkmanship that inevitably leads to more spending, not less. While the political class wrings its hands over hypothetical cuts, the real cuts are felt by families and small businesses fleeing the state, priced out by the very policies debated with such theatrical performativity.
This isn't a clash of titans; it's a squabble among toddlers in a candy store, all demanding the biggest lollipop. And we, the enduring citizens of California, are perpetually stuck with the bill. Perhaps if they spent less time grandstanding for the cameras and more time fostering an environment where wealth is created, not just redistributed, they wouldn't have to fight over a shrinking pie. But then again, that might be too much to ask from the self-proclaimed intellectual giants in Sacramento.
