While the Santa Barbara Independent is undoubtedly performing verbal gymnastics to reframe this as some nuanced form of progressive prison reform, the rest of us see it for what it is: an admission of spectacular failure.

For years, the 'let's just talk about it' approach to serious crime, especially when coupled with mental health issues, has turned California's cities into open-air asylums and shoplifting paradises. The idea that violent offenders could simply 'divert' their way out of accountability and into a program that likely involves interpretive dance and journaling was always absurd. Now, with even Newsom backing away from the brink, one has to wonder if the state's liberal leadership accidentally stumbled upon common sense while searching for a new pronoun.

This move, while a small step, is a tacit acknowledgment from the state's top Democrat that their soft-on-crime, 'root causes' philosophy has utterly collapsed. It seems that even the progressive dream of replacing jails with wellness retreats has hit a snag – mainly that criminals keep committing crimes.
