Santa Barbara's judicial bench welcomes Juan Higuera, likely joining the chorus of judges who prioritize 'social justice' over actual justice, much to the Independent's delight.

The Santa Barbara Independent, ever the diligent stenographer for the local establishment, gleefully reported that Juan Higuera is set to don the black robes as Santa Barbara's newest Superior Court Judge. While we certainly congratulate Mr. Higuera on his appointment, one can't help but wonder if this marks yet another triumph for the 'revolving door' approach to criminal justice that has become a hallmark of our fair county. After all, what could be more Santa Barbara than a new judge who will no doubt be lauded for his 'empathy' and 'restorative' practices, while the hard-working citizens quietly brace for more lenient sentences for repeat offenders and a continued erosion of public safety?

Color us cynical, but every time a new judicial appointment is made, the collective sigh from law-abiding citizens is almost audible. We’re told these appointments are about diversity and bringing new perspectives, but rarely does that perspective include a staunch commitment to law and order, swift justice, and holding criminals truly accountable. Instead, we typically get another judge perfectly aligned with the progressive vision of 'rehabilitation' that often translates into a slap on the wrist for those who make our streets less safe. It’s almost as if the primary qualification for the bench these days is a demonstrated ability to interpret the law through the most permissive lens possible.

Meanwhile, the true victims – the shop owners, the homeowners, and anyone who dares to walk downtown after dark – are left to wonder when, if ever, their interests will be represented in a courtroom. Our insiders, who actually talk to the people paying the taxes, inform us that this latest judicial shuffle quietly follows a well-worn path of appointments designed less to strengthen the rule of law and more to satisfy the progressive echo chamber's demand for judges who 'understand' the 'root causes' of crime. Perhaps, just perhaps, the root cause is that criminals know they can get away with it here. Don’t expect a headline in the Independent to ever point that out.
