MUNI GOLF COURSE: MARXIST MOONSHOT OR MONUMENT TO MEDIOCRITY?

The Independent asks if a golf course can stop the ocean, proving once again that some questions are best left unasked, especially by those who write them.

MUNI GOLF COURSE: MARXIST MOONSHOT OR MONUMENT TO MEDIOCRITY?The Dispatch
Santa Barbara Independent · The Whipping Post · NO.408 · PANEL 4/6 · SB-4JV

Santa Barbara’s reliably ‘independent’ thinkers at The Santa Barbara Independent have once again plunged into the depths of progressive absurdity, this time pondering if our Municipal Golf Course should double as a seawall, a low-income housing project, or perhaps a more ‘affordable’ place for trust-funders to practice their putts. One must admire the sheer audacity of asking a golf course to shoulder the burden of climate change, housing crises, and leisure-class affordability all at once. Perhaps the greenskeepers could also teach advanced calculus and cure the common cold in their spare time? The sheer economic illiteracy on display is almost breathtaking, as they contemplate transforming a revenue-generating asset into a multi-purpose, money-sucking black hole, all in the name of whatever progressive boondoggle happens to be trending this week.

Of course, the unspoken truth, as always, is that this isn't about golf, housing, or even the tides. It's about control. It's about seizing productive assets and re-imagining them as utopian playgrounds for unelected bureaucrats and their pet projects. The only 'affordable housing' they're truly interested in is for the influx of government consultants who will inevitably be hired to 'study' these harebrained schemes. Meanwhile, the actual taxpaying citizens who enjoy, or might enjoy, the golf course are treated like inconvenient obstacles in the path of progress, or rather, regress.

Nobody bothers to mention the millions the county has already frittered away on 'studies' for 'sustainable solutions' that inevitably involve more spending, more regulation, and less freedom. This latest intellectual meandering from our local 'paper of record' is just another thinly veiled attempt to justify more government overreach and less common sense. Perhaps it's time we asked if The Santa Barbara Independent should save us from rising seas of bureaucratic nonsense rather than asking a golf course to do so. Our money is on the golf course having a better shot at it.
