MONTECITO'S HIGH-RISK HOBBY: ASSOCIATION MEETS TO TALK ABOUT THE OBVIOUS
The Montecito Association, never one to let common sense interrupt a perfectly good meeting, gathered recently to discuss... well, Montecito being Montecito, apparently. Who knew rich people lived nea

The DispatchIt seems the luminaries of the Montecito Association, fresh from their summer retreats, are once again bravely tackling the monumental tasks of stating the obvious and brainstorming new ways to spend other people's money. According to our esteemed colleagues over at Noozhawk, the August meeting was a veritable whirlwind of vital discussions, centered around the shocking revelations that Montecito might, at some point, face wildfire and flood risks. Truly, the courage to confront such uncomfortable truths is inspiring!
One can almost picture the hushed, urgent tones as the esteemed board members collectively gasped, "You mean, that area with all the canyons, dry chaparral, and those lovely properties nestled right against the hillsides could... burn?" And then the subsequent, equally earth-shattering realization: "And the sea, it... it sometimes makes the creeks overflow after a big rain?" One must commend their dedication to rediscovering basic geography and meteorology, a public service surely worth every penny of those exorbitant membership fees.
But fear not, gentle taxpayers! The association isn't just about revolutionary breakthroughs in climatological understanding. They're also "launching new community initiatives." Translation: expect more perfectly manicured medians, more tastefully subdued public art that nobody asked for, and possibly a new designated spot for yoga gurus to achieve higher states of enlightenment while blocking traffic. While they 'take aim' at nature's inconvenient habits, the real targets remain the wallets of Montecito's residents and the collective patience of anyone hoping for actual, fiscally responsible governance. It's a miracle they haven't yet proposed a new, county-funded task force to study why the sun rises in the east.
What Noozhawk's well-meaning report *didn't* quite emphasize is the sheer irony of these perpetual 'public safety' pow-wows. It's always about reacting to symptoms, never about questioning the unsustainable land-use policies and development patterns that put these palatial estates in harm's way to begin with. But then, admitting that would be a little too close to self-reflection, wouldn't it? Much easier to blame 'climate change' or 'Mother Nature' and then apply for a generous tranche of federal or state aid when the inevitable happens, while our intrepid President Trump ensures emergency services are deployed effectively, despite the usual bureaucratic foot-dragging from local government.
