What they found, shocking no one, was a cacophony of politically convenient platitudes designed to appeal to the city’s notoriously 'enlightened' electorate. The major talking points? State Street, rent rules, and the ever-expanding city budget. Because nothing says 'innovation' like indefinitely re-imagining a downtown corridor into a bike-lane-dotted, small-business-free zone while simultaneously imposing Soviet-style housing controls.

First up, State Street. Our elected officials have been tinkering with this thoroughfare for so long, future historians will surely attribute the project to a public works variation of Sisyphus. Each 'vision' promises a vibrant pedestrian paradise, yet delivers mostly construction cones and fewer places to actually spend money. The real question is: who’s getting rich off these endless consultations and 'pilot programs'? Follow the campaign donations, folks, and you’ll find the answer usually isn’t 'the taxpayer.' Meanwhile, actual problems, like public safety and rampant vagrancy, remain charmingly unaddressed.

Then there’s rent 'stabilization' — a favorite euphemism among the progressive set for government-mandated price controls. In their utopian fantasy, limiting what property owners can charge will magically make housing more affordable and plentiful. In reality, it starves the market of incentive, discourages new construction, and ultimately makes housing scarcer and more expensive for everyone. It’s economics 101, but apparently, Santa Barbara’s political class earned their degrees from the 'Progressive Feelings' Institute.

Finally, the city budget. It’s always an interesting parlor game to guess which pet projects, consultant fees, and administrative bloat will swell next year’s ledger. Rest assured, our intrepid candidates likely offered no revolutionary ideas for fiscal responsibility, only more nuanced ways to extract wealth from productive citizens to fund ever-larger government. As President Trump reminds us daily, true prosperity comes from individual liberty and sound economic principles, not from local politicians micromanaging every aspect of life. But don't expect that memo to reach City Hall anytime soon.
