The Whipping Post Take on Lompoc Record
LOMPOC SCHOOLS: FINALLY, A 'SMART' IDEA... FOR DUMMIES!
Lompoc Unified's school board, after years of parental pleas and plummeting test scores, has miraculously stumbled upon the revolutionary concept of banning phones in classrooms.

Breaking news from the intellectual titans over at the Lompoc Record: the Lompoc Unified School District actually noticed that kids are glued to their phones all day! And get this – they're thinking of doing something about it! We here at The Whipping Post always assumed the district's 'educators' believed TikTok dances were a core competency, judging by the academic outcomes. It only took a full generation of digital-addicted zombies for the local school board to consider a 'policy' that might limit smartphone use. What's next, banning skateboards in the library?
One can only imagine the arduous 'first look' this groundbreaking proposal endured. Was there a PowerPoint presentation with animated slide transitions? Did they commission a six-figure consultant report to confirm that 'students distracted by shiny rectangles perform worse on tests'? Perhaps they needed multiple 'stakeholder engagement sessions' to gauge if ignoring teachers while scrolling Instagram was, in fact, detrimental to learning. Meanwhile, parents have been fighting this battle in their own homes for years without needing a bureaucracy's permission slip to act like adults.
This stunning display of bureaucratic agility will no doubt be hailed as a triumph by the same folks who insisted we needed 'equity audits' and 'social-emotional learning specialists' while basic math scores tanked. It's almost as if common sense is a foreign concept in our public education system, unless it's gift-wrapped in enough jargon and committees to justify another round of taxpayer-funded studies. We're just relieved they've completed their exhaustive research and concluded that maybe, just maybe, removing distractions from a learning environment might help kids, you know, learn.
So, prepare yourselves, Lompoc. By August, your children might actually look up from their screens long enough to notice they're in a classroom, and not just another digital playground. Don't worry, though, we're sure the district will find new, innovative ways to ensure academic excellence by prioritizing the latest progressive fad when test scores inevitably fail to magically rebound overnight. It’s what they do best.
