The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
LOCAL 'SHOCKER': PRICE CONTROLS DON'T WORK! LEFTIES PERPLEXED!
In a stunning display of basic economic literacy, even the Santa Barbara Independent admits the obvious: government meddling in markets has consequences.

Follow the MoneyIt seems a rare moment of clarity has descended upon the editorial offices of the Santa Barbara Independent, as they’ve stumbled upon a universal truth that conservatives have been shouting from the rooftops for decades: price controls – particularly on housing – do nothing but strangle the very market they purport to help. Who knew that telling property owners they can't make a profit would discourage them from, you know, owning property or building more of it? It’s almost as if foundational economic principles aren't just quaint suggestions to be ignored by our progressive overlords.
The Independent, in a truly groundbreaking admission, conceded that price controls "discourage investment, reduce supply, and shift costs onto new renters." One can practically hear the audible gasps from City Hall as staffers frantically try to scrub their past pronouncements about the virtues of 'housing justice' and 'equitable rent burdens.' The revelation that government intervention actually *hurts* those it aims to help must be a real head-scratcher for an establishment so committed to proving central planning can outsmart the invisible hand.
Of course, it takes someone having 'lived this' – as the Independent blurb points out – to understand what any high school economics student could tell you. For years, the left has been convinced that if they just legislate away the laws of supply and demand, the market will somehow magically produce affordable housing, all while punishing the 'greedy' landlords and developers. Instead, we get empty lots, deferred maintenance, and desperate tenants fighting over dwindling options, forcing hardworking families out of our beautiful county.
Perhaps this small flickering of common sense at the Independent is a sign. Or more likely, it’s a momentary lapse before they swing back to demanding more committees, more studies, and more taxpayer-funded 'solutions' that only exacerbate the problem. We won't hold our breath, but for one brief shining moment, they almost connected the dots between bureaucratic overreach and market dysfunction. Now, if only they could link it to campaign donations from developers pushing for 'affordable' projects on prime real estate rather than acknowledging permitting reform, property rights protections, or simply letting people build what the market needs.
