LOCAL EMERGENCY DIRECTOR FINDS THE NEAREST EXIT, ESCAPES COUNTY

It’s a story as old as Santa Barbara County itself: another competent professional realizes the best way to handle an emergency is to get as far away from county bureaucracy as possible. Our colleagues at Noozhawk, bless their hearts, dutifully reported the sudden departure of Kelly Hubbard, the erstwhile Director of Emergency Management, who apparently decided that managing actual disasters was less perilous than navigating the labyrinthine halls of county government for another minute.

Hubbard apparently submitted her resignation on a Tuesday (or was it a Wednesday? details get blurry when the urgency is 'escape velocity') and was gone by the end of the day. One might think a county as prone to declaring emergencies as ours would see such a rapid departure as… well, an emergency. But then again, the real emergency is often the daily grind of progressive policy failures wrapped in politically correct platitudes. We’re sure her final staff meeting involved a mandatory Zoom call on 'equitable emergency response for historically marginalized gophers' before she sprinted for the door.

While the official line is all about 'best for myself at this time,' we here at The Whipping Post read between the lines, which in Santa Barbara often involves a magnifying glass and a financial disclosure form. Was it the endless reams of DEI training? The constant demand for more climate resilience reports while actual roads remained unrepaired? Or perhaps she just realized that her actual job—you know, coordinating against fires and floods—was increasingly overshadowed by the need to coordinate talking points for the next Supervisor’s virtue-signaling press conference?

Our betting pool suggests she found a job somewhere where 'emergency' still means fire and flood, not a lack of gender-neutral porta-potties at the homeless encampment. We don't blame her. After all, if you can’t make headway against a county board determined to make every molehill a climate-catastrophe-equity-justice mountain, the only sensible response is to declare your own personal state of emergency and evacuate. We wish her well in her newfound freedom from bureaucratic quicksand. Who needs FEMA when you have freedom?
