The Whipping Post Take on SB County Board of Supervisors

LANDFILL ROAD 'EXTENSION' IS COUNTY'S LATEST ROAD TO NOWHERE, PAVED WITH TAX DOLLARS!

Santa Barbara's benevolent overlords at the Board of Supervisors are at it again, rubber-stamping another 'non-project' that will undoubtedly cost taxpayers a fortune.

The august Board of Supervisors, in their infinite wisdom, has decided that simply fixing the potholes to the Tajiguas landfill is far too pedestrian. No, dear reader, they're extending the main access road! Because what's a landfill without a grand boulevard leading to it? This little gem, buried deep in what the Supes call an 'Administrative Item' (™), allows the Director of Public Works to 'advertise and receive bids' for this asphalt-on-gold project. One assumes the bids will be received from their favorite, campaign-donating contractors, naturally.

And the cherry on top? The Board has magisterially determined this road extension, which will surely involve moving dirt, trucks, and, you know, _constructing a road_, is somehow "not a project that is subject to environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)." Yes, you read that right. According to them, building a road is merely an "administrative activity of government that will not result in direct or indirect physical changes in the environment." One must assume their definition of 'environment' is limited to the inside of their air-conditioned offices. The Whipping Post is still trying to figure out which magical, eco-friendly concrete they plan to use.

This isn't about practical fixes; it's about perpetually expanding government reach and budget, often under the guise of an 'emergency' or 'administrative' action to bypass pesky environmental regulations that ordinary citizens face. The local dailies like to just print these items as fact, but we see the real story. This administrative sleight of hand ensures no inconvenient questions are asked about the true cost, the ultimate environmental impact, or, heaven forbid, whether this is just another way to funnel taxpayer dollars into the pockets of the politically connected.

So, while the Supervisors pave their way to bigger budgets, remember that every "administrative activity" they deem exempt from environmental review is likely a shortcut for them and a long, costly detour for your wallet. But hey, at least the garbage trucks will have a smoother ride to the heap. Priorities!
