The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
JAILBEDS FOR ALL! COUNTY ASKS ‘WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?’ ON NEW ROOMS!
Santa Barbara County, flush with cash they pretend isn't taxpayer money, is seeking 'community input' on how best to shuffle prisoners as they phase out perfectly good main jail beds.

Power & PoliticsThe Santa Barbara Independent, a paper so 'community-focused' they probably ask for input on what font to use, reports that the County is bravely asking for public opinion on new housing units at the Northern Branch Jail. This, naturally, comes as they're phasing out 'main jail beds' — because nothing says fiscal responsibility like building new units while simultaneously rendering existing ones obsolete. One can only imagine the 'community input' they're truly seeking: 'How many extra millions do you think we can comfortably spend before someone notices it's not going towards, say, fixing the roads?' It’s typical county administrative bloat, disguised as 'engagement' and funded by your perpetually increasing property taxes.
Of course, the unspoken angle here, which the Independent gracefully pirouettes around, is the grand progressive vision for criminal justice. Phasing out beds isn't about overcrowding; it's about making sure our facilities remain compliant with whatever new, ever-more-lenient 'standards' are cooked up by Sacramento's social justice warriors. We can't have prisoners feeling too… incarcerated, can we? Heaven forbid a jail actually serve its purpose instead of becoming a luxurious, taxpayer-funded rehabilitation resort.
So, while the county 'invites' you to weigh in, rest assured the outcome is already meticulously planned by unelected bureaucrats and their well-connected consultants. The 'community input' meeting is just a required box-tick before they proceed with the pre-ordained, spendthrift plan. Expect a lot of virtuous-sounding talk about 'equitable housing solutions' and 're-imagining incarceration,' all while the bill keeps climbing, and actual crime prevention remains a quaint, forgotten concept. Remember, every time they ask for 'input,' they've usually already done the math on how much more they can extract from you.
