Noozhawk breathlessly reported this week that the Northern Branch Jail, that monument to public funds poured into housing folks who, shall we say, made 'alternative life choices,' has bagged a national accreditation for its "correctional health care." Apparently, providing high-quality medical services to those who have actively chosen to break society’s rules is now a badge of honor, not just a staggering line item on the county budget. One wonders if they'll start offering elective cosmetic surgery next, fully covered, of course.

This isn't about ensuring humane conditions; it's about virtue signaling with taxpayer dollars. While law-abiding citizens grapple with skyrocketing co-pays and insurance denials, our county bureaucrats are busy securing 'national accreditations' for making sure convicted felons get top-tier preventative care. It’s almost as if the priorities are completely backward, but then again, that's par for the course in Santa Barbara County. Maybe a national accreditation for fixing the potholes on Highway 101 would be a more worthwhile use of effort, but that wouldn't garner the same kind of progressive adulation, would it?

The hidden angle here, as always, is the money trail. These accreditations rarely come cheap, and maintaining them means constant upgrades, specialized staff, and endless paperwork — all funded by the same folks who can barely afford their own doctor’s visits. It's a bureaucratic feedback loop where more 'standards' mean more spending, and the only beneficiaries are the accreditation agencies and the public employee unions. Meanwhile, the Sheriff's Office gets to bask in the glow of national recognition for services that, frankly, sound more like a luxury resort than a correctional facility designed to deter crime. But hey, at least the inmates are healthy!
