JAIL EXPANSION? SUPERVISORS VOTE TO 'RECEIVE AND FILE' MORE TAXPAYER CASH!

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors recently convened a masterclass in bureaucratic doublespeak, proudly announcing their intention to 'receive and file' the Northern Branch Jail Project's latest schematics. For those of you who don't speak 'government-ese,' this is how they approve an enormous outlay of your hard-earned money without actually *approving* anything that might look like a concrete decision. It’s like buying a yacht by simply admiring its blueprint and calling it 'community engagement.'

Apparently, after years of endless studies and 'community engagement meetings' (where presumably the community engaged in a collective eye-roll), the Supervisors are still merely 'planning, funding, and procuring.' This isn't just kicking the can down the road; it's buying a new, gold-plated can, then hiring a consultant to study the optimal kicking trajectory, all while declaring the whole charade exempt from environmental review because, you know, planning doesn't *actually* change the environment until it *does*.

Only in Santa Barbara County can a project costing tens of millions be presented as a purely administrative act, devoid of any tangible impact. They’re treating this multi-story jail expansion like ordering paper clips – just 'receive and file' it, boys, and the taxpayers will sort out the bill later. The real story here isn't the jail, but the magic trick by which our local politicos can spend public funds with the plausible deniability of a mime on a unicycle. Don't worry, though, we're sure the 'planning' will be very, very expensive.
