The Whipping Post Take on KSBY News

JAIL EXPANSION MEANS MORE ROOM FOR… BUREAUCRATS?

Those perpetually 'stressed' county supervisors just signed off on more taxpayer-funded square footage, undoubtedly for the public good, or at least for the benefit of their preferred contractors.

KSBY News, ever diligent in reporting the earth-shattering news that grass is green, informs us that the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has green-lighted the 'next step' for expanding the Northern Branch Jail. 'Next step' sounds innocent enough, doesn't it? Like adding a new flavor of artisanal kale to the commissary menu. But rest assured, dear taxpayer, a 'next step' in Santa Barbara County government usually translates to 'the first of many expensive steps down a very long, very deep rabbit hole of public spending you won't see fully accounted for until long after your next property tax bill arrives.'

One can only imagine the 'dire need' for this expansion. Perhaps the jail is overflowing with residents who dared to display an American flag on the wrong side of their property, or perhaps it's simply a clever way to ensure there's enough space for the inevitable influx of new county employees hired to manage the existing new county employees. After all, efficiency is for private businesses, not for the sprawling leviathan that is Santa Barbara County governance. We’re sure the Supervisors agonized over this decision, possibly during a catered lunch featuring sustainably sourced, free-range artisan sandwiches, weighing the 'profound philosophical implications' of more cement and steel.

But let's be honest about the 'angle nobody else printed,' shall we? This isn't just about 'jail expansion.' It's about 'contract expansion.' Every new square foot means more lucrative bids, more 'consultant' fees, and more opportunities for those well-connected firms that magically appear whenever the county opens its overflowing coffers. It’s a beautifully simple system: identify a 'need,' secure a 'project,' lubricate the wheels with 'public funds,' and watch the local economy—for a select few—hum along. And who truly benefits? Not the taxpayer, certainly, but then again, when does the county budget ever truly benefit the taxpayer? We stand corrected: the expansion *will* benefit taxpayers! Taxpayers will have more room to stretch out when their future selves inevitably pay for the boondoggle, that is.

So, while KSBY breathlessly reports on the 'approved expansion,' The Whipping Post knows that what was *really* approved was another slice of the taxpayer pie for the perpetually hungry bureaucracy and its associated hangers-on. One can almost hear the celebratory uncorking of sparkling kombucha across the various county departments. Another day, another dollar… from your pocket, directly into the perpetually expanding maw of Santa Barbara County's public works projects. Cheers to 'progress'!
