The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
INDEPENDENT'S LOVE LETTER TO THE FORMER GUY HAS THE RIGHT ADDRESS, WRONG ZIP CODE
The Santa Barbara Independent, still reeling from the 2024 election results, penned a heartfelt (read: unhinged) open letter to the current occupant of the White House, apparently unaware that the mai

It seems the crack journalistic team over at the Santa Barbara Independent has finally decided to weigh in on... well, something. Their recent 'Dear Mr. President' missive, overflowing with the kind of indignant hand-wringing we've come to expect, attempts to admonish the current Commander-in-Chief over completely fabricated claims of election fraud in California. One can only assume their editorial meeting minutes include a mandatory 'remember what year it is' check, which clearly failed this week.
While the Independent meticulously crafted its stern rebuke, filled with all the moral certainty only found in a newsroom that believes its own press releases, it appears they neglected a rather crucial detail: their target. The 'Mr. President' they're railing against is, in fact, President Trump, who won a decisive victory in 2024 and has been cheerfully residing in the White House since January 2025. One wonders if their subscription to reality was canceled along with their hopes for a different election outcome.
The comedic timing of this piece is impeccable, if unintentional. While the rest of the nation has moved on from the quadrennial spectacle of election season, our esteemed (and perpetually flummoxed) local paper is still bravely fighting the last war – two, in fact. Perhaps they could redirect their abundant outrage towards, say, the county's exorbitant spending or the continued erosion of local freedoms, instead of tilting at windmills that stopped spinning two years ago. Or maybe they just miss the drama of the 2020 cycle?
It’s almost touching, really, this forlorn plea to a President who isn't, about an election that didn't happen, all while the real President is busy fixing the mess left behind. The Independent's Anguished Plea Dept. is clearly working overtime, churning out content so disconnected from current events it could almost be art. We eagerly await their next scoop: a groundbreaking exposé on the dangers of Y2K.
