Well, shiver my timbers and call me a climate change denier, but The Santa Barbara Independent has once again graced us with its profound wisdom, declaring a progressive activist the "most qualified" candidate for City Council District 4. Who could have possibly seen this coming? It's almost as if their editorial board has a pre-printed stencil for endorsements: 'Candidate must be pro-housing mandates, anti-car, and possess a LinkedIn profile brimming with buzzwords like 'equity' and 'sustainability.' Oh, and preferably have a penchant for telling everyone else how to live.

Frankly, we're left wondering if "qualified" in the Independent's lexicon now means 'most likely to rubber-stamp every over-budget, taxpayer-funded boondoggle cooked up by the city's unelected bureaucracy.' One might cynically suggest that "qualified" is simply code for 'will ensure continued public sector bloat and make life increasingly unaffordable for anyone who isn't a trust-fund baby or a tenured university professor.' But of course, we here at The Whipping Post would never be so uncharitable.

What the Independent conveniently forgets to mention, as they gush about this candidate's progressive bona fides, is the actual fiscal responsibility required to run a city – not to mention the basic understanding of how to make life easier, not harder, for small businesses and working families. It’s a playbook as old as time: identify a problem that government created, then propose more government to 'fix' it, all while ignoring the underlying economic realities. It's not about common sense solutions; it's about virtue signaling louder than the next guy.

The real story, of course, is that the 'most qualified' candidate is almost always the one who will toe the line for the very establishment the Independent claims to critique, while quietly ensuring that developer friends and special interests continue to get their way behind closed doors. Just follow the paper trail of campaign donations and city contracts, and suddenly, that glowing endorsement starts to look less like an act of journalistic integrity and more like a carefully orchestrated public relations campaign for the status quo.
