The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
INDEPENDENT ENDORSES CITY HALL REGULAR: PREPARE FOR MORE BUREAUCRACY!
The 'esteemed' Santa Barbara Independent, ever vigilant for a chance to cuddle up with the establishment, throws its weight behind a familiar face for Mayor.

Oh, what a groundbreaking revelation from the Santa Barbara Independent! In a move that surprised absolutely no one watching the local political merry-go-round, they’ve decided their preferred mayoral candidate is… drumroll please… another lifelong City Hall fixture. Who else but a man deeply entrenched in the county's bureaucratic labyrinth could possibly guide our fair city through a 'significant budget shortfall' — perhaps by creating a dozen new committees to study the shortfall, funded by yet another tax on our increasingly beleaguered property owners?
The Independent, in its infinite sagacity, suggests our next mayor needs 'more than good intentions.' One might infer they mean someone who understands how to navigate the intricate network of progressive pet projects, union demands, and unfunded mandates that got us into this fiscal mess in the first place. You see, the solution to government overspending is always, unequivocally, *more government expertise* – preferably from someone who helped create the spending. It’s like hiring the arsonist to consult on fire safety.
What the Independent conveniently forgets to mention, or perhaps just doesn't understand, is that the 'leadership' they champion often translates directly into higher fees, more regulations, and a further erosion of personal liberty and economic opportunity for actual residents and small businesses. We're told we need a steady hand, but whose hand will it be steadying? Certainly not the taxpayer's, who will inevitably be reaching deeper into their pockets to fund the 'innovative' solutions cooked up by our municipal mandarins. Expect more bike lanes, less parking, and a general air of paternalistic governance.
Rather than demanding a true outsider who might actually slash wasteful spending and challenge the status quo, the Independent rolls out the red carpet for yet another insider. It takes a remarkable lack of self-awareness to call for a new direction while pushing the same old cast of characters. But then again, this is Santa Barbara, where 'change' usually just means a new shade of progressive paint on an increasingly rickety bureaucratic machine.
So, while the Independent pats itself on the back for endorsing 'experience,' ordinary citizens can brace themselves for the same tired policies, the same bloated budgets, and the same quiet disdain for anyone who suggests that perhaps, just perhaps, our elected officials should spend less and empower citizens more.
