The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent

The Santa Barbara Independent, in a shocking exposé, reveals that individuals seeking public office often possess careers involving 'public affairs' and, gasp, 'influence.'

The DispatchIt appears the investigative journalists over at the *Santa Barbara Independent* have cracked the code: people who work in, around, or even tangentially *near* politics might, just might, have 'public affairs' as part of their professional lexicon. Their recent blurb, dripping with the sort of faux-naïve outrage that only a legacy media outlet can muster, questioned a candidate's background as a 'public affairs specialist' and dared to ask: 'for whom?' One can almost hear the gasps from the newsroom as they stumbled upon the earth-shattering realization that candidates often have jobs before running for office, and sometimes those jobs involve... interacting with the public about issues. Shocking, we know.
Frankly, the *Independent's* pearl-clutching suggests they've only just realized that 'public affairs specialist' is a legitimate job title, not a coded message from a shadowy cabal. Perhaps they're confusing it with 'community organizer,' a role usually reserved for those with minimal private sector experience but an abundance of taxpayer-funded grant proposals. Or maybe they believe all candidates should emerge fully formed from a progressive think tank, unburdened by any actual experience in the rough-and-tumble world of commerce or, heaven forbid, advocacy. The simple fact that a candidate possesses a skillset useful for navigating the labyrinthine bureaucracy of local government is apparently cause for deep suspicion in their hallowed halls.
Meanwhile, the rest of us in Santa Barbara County are left to wonder what the *Independent* considers an acceptable pre-political career. Do they prefer candidates who moonlight as organic kale farmers or professional grievance-mongers? The Whipping Post, for one, finds it refreshing when candidates have actual jobs that require them to understand how the world works outside of a non-profit boardroom. But then again, we're not paid to feign ignorance for clicks. Perhaps a 'public affairs specialist' is just someone who understands how to get things done, which, for some, is the ultimate unforgivable sin.
