The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
INDEPENDENT DISCOVERS HISTORY, STILL MISSES PLOT ON COURAGE
Local rag ponders Revolutionary War 'what ifs,' conveniently ignores present-day tyranny of over-taxation and stifling bureaucrats right in its own backyard.

The DispatchThe Santa Barbara Independent, in a moment of profound historical rumination, recently asked if its writers would have had the gumption to join the resistance against colonial overlords 250 years ago. One could almost hear the quill pens scratching in earnest, perhaps even a latte-fueled debate over the proper revolutionary tea blend. It’s truly heartwarming to see our local scribes grapple with dilemmas of yesteryear, particularly when today’s 'tyranny' looks suspiciously like exorbitant sales taxes, endless permitting delays, and a County Board that thinks it’s still 1970s Berkeley.
While we commend the Independent for dusting off their history books – perhaps a refreshing change from recycling press releases – their introspection feels a tad…misplaced. One might wonder if the same valor they project onto themselves in powdered wigs would extend to, say, questioning why a small business owner needs six different county approvals just to hang a sign. Or maybe, just maybe, they could channel that revolutionary spirit into resisting the progressive overreach that makes simply living in Santa Barbara an act of financial heroism for most working families.
Instead, we get navel-gazing about taxation without representation from centuries past, while the current administration right here in Santa Barbara County continues to tax and regulate residents into oblivion, often without a whisper of effective pushback from the media. The real struggle isn't against King George III anymore; it's against the local planning department and a seemingly endless appetite for taxpayer dollars to fund pet projects and bloated bureaucracies. The 'courage' needed today is to call out the present-day overlords, not fantasize about rebelling against long-dead ones.
Perhaps the Independent staff should set down their 'Hamilton' cast albums for a moment and look around our beautiful, yet increasingly unaffordable, county. The courage it takes to confront the actual powers that be, the ones enacting policies that genuinely impact everyday lives, might be a little less romantic than a musket charge but far more relevant. But then again, that might require actual reporting on local government, rather than pondering hypothetical heroics against a phantom monarchy.
