The Whipping Post Take on Santa Barbara Independent
INDEPENDENT ASKS “IS CALIFORNIA FAILED STATE?” – FINALLY, THEY NOTICED!
After decades of cheerleading every progressive boondoggle, the brain trust at the Independent has finally peeked out from behind the kale curtain to ask a truly groundbreaking question.

Santa Barbara’s most steadfast purveyor of 'news,' the Independent, recently published an earth-shattering ponderance: 'Is California a failed state?' One almost expects a follow-up asking if the sky is blue. For years, ordinary Californians have watched their tax dollars vaporize into 'bullet trains' that go nowhere, 'green initiatives' that turn off the lights, and 'homeless solutions' that just expand the tent cities. But it seems the editorial board needed a slow news day to notice the accumulating evidence.
Now, after championing every environmental mandate, every spend-first-ask-questions-never policy, and every 'equity' program that siphons funds from basic services, the Independent is suddenly clutching its pearls. It's almost endearing, like a toddler discovering rain outside after painting the windows shut. Perhaps they've finally seen the utility bills, or maybe even tried to start a small business in this regulatory wonderland. One wonders what took them so long to connect the dots between progressive governance and economic decline.
The real question isn't whether California is failing; it's why outlets like the Independent have consistently refused to hold the architects of this decline—our beloved Sacramento overlords and their local acolytes—accountable. While they were busy lecturing us about recycling our yoga mats, our infrastructure crumbled, our schools ranked last, and our cost of living became a cruel joke. The 'Critical Mass' they’re now wringing their hands over is less a mystery and more the inevitable outcome of policies they've happily rubber-stamped for decades, while ignoring the warnings from anyone right of Che Guevara.
Frankly, we at The Whipping Post aren't surprised. We've been filing this report for years, though our readership doesn't require a flow chart to understand that when you put progressives in charge of anything more complicated than a compost bin, eventual failure is not a question of 'if,' but 'when.' Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to go find a story where Democrats aren't suddenly discovering the consequences of their own actions.
