GUADALUPE GETS 'AFFORDABLE' HOUSING; TAXPAYERS GET THE BILL!

KSBY News was on hand this week to gush over the one-year anniversary of Escalante Meadows, Guadalupe's latest 'affordable housing' triumph. Apparently, the celebration included cake and self-congratulation, because when the government finally manages to build something (usually with someone else's money), they expect a parade. These developments are always marketed as a boon to the community, but the fine print, as usual, tells a different story – one of endless taxpayer subsidies, bureaucratic red tape, and an ever-expanding housing crisis that always seems to get worse the more 'solutions' the Left devises.

Escalante Meadows, like so many other projects championed by the usual suspects on the Board of Supervisors, isn't just 'affordable' because someone decreed it so. It's 'affordable' because you, the humble taxpayer, are picking up the tab for layers of construction costs, regulatory hoops, and the inevitable cost overruns that follow any government-backed venture like a lost puppy. One has to wonder if these celebratory anniversaries ever mention the true cost to the county’s budget, or how many market-rate units could have been built if the stifling regulations and endless fees beloved by our local progressive planners weren’t baked into every brick.

The real story KSBY missed, buried under all the confetti, is how these projects perpetuate the very problem they claim to solve. By constantly pushing for more subsidized housing, our well-meaning but utterly economically blind supervisors simply create more demand for government intervention, driving up prices for everyone else in a vicious cycle. Meanwhile, the free market, which actually builds homes efficiently, is shackled by environmental zealots and permitting delays. It's a miracle anyone can afford a doghouse in this county, let alone a human one, when Big Government insists on playing developer.
