It seems the esteemed Goleta Union School District Board is determined to live up to the highest standards of modern public education: focusing on everything but reading, writing, and arithmetic. According to Noozhawk, candidates are bravely tackling the weighty issues of ICE, housing, and the truly baffling phenomenon of fewer children actually enrolling in schools. One might almost forget these are supposed to be people dedicated to, you know, schools.

Indeed, when confronted with the existential crisis of dwindling student bodies, the intellectual titans vying for a board seat naturally pivot to federal immigration policy and affordable housing – topics entirely within the purview of a local school board, obviously. It's almost as if the simple solution of, say, making the schools excellent enough that parents *want* to send their children there, or perhaps not driving out every last taxpaying family with insane housing costs and punitive regulations, never occurred to them. But then, that would be *too* easy, and far too focused on actual outcomes.

Instead, we get the usual progressive pabulum from these unopposed incumbents and one fresh face. The 'declining enrollment' is not, of course, due to any local policy or performance. No, it must be the fault of the economy, or the weather, or perhaps an unseen celestial alignment. Never mind that families are fleeing California's high cost of living and, let's be honest, increasingly questionable educational priorities. But why address the root causes when you can pontificate on federal agencies that have precisely zero to do with teaching algebra?

It's a perfect encapsulation of how our local institutions, once dedicated to specific, vital services, now fancy themselves policy think tanks for the entire universe, all while the very service they're meant to provide slowly crumbles. Perhaps if they spent less time virtue signaling about ICE and more time ensuring students can read a basic sentence, enrollment numbers might just magically turn around. A truly radical idea, we know.
